Description

Do you sometimes feel you must hide yourself in order to help your clients? What if there were a way to be your authentic self while still serving your clients’ best interests? This session will zero in on the most important aspects of “Self-of-Therapist" work, including practical guidance on self-disclosure and countertransference, as well as how to bring yourself fully into sessions in ways that ultimately move therapy forward. In this session, you’ll discover:

  • Three crucial countertransference pitfalls, including possibly rupturing the alliance
  • How to develop a clear method for managing countertransference in session
  • How and why therapist self-disclosure can deepen the therapeutic relationship
  • How to apply relevant ethical codes to therapist self-disclosure and countertransference situations that may arise in practice

Kirsten Lind Seal, PhD, LMFT, is adjunct associate professor of MFT Ethics at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, and ethics faculty in the doctoral program at Chaminade University in Honolulu. She presents regularly on ethical issues while maintaining a virtual private practice. She’s a long-time regular contributor to Relationship Reboot, a relationship segment on WCCO (CBS) TV’s Midmorning Show in the Twin Cities.
