The importance of the soul in therapy
The word soul has multiple roots and meanings and this webcast is an opportunity to explore soul in the context of the therapeutic endeavor. To many therapists, soul is significant and connected to both philosophy and practice of psychotherapy or perhaps even seen as inseparable to our field. And yet, the word soul rarely appears in psychotherapy literature or on practitioners websites.
In this webcast series, we meet with well known practitioners, researchers and writers who have grappled with the dichotomies inherent in the idea, in concepts and meaning in psychotherapy contexts.

Thomas Moore is the author of the bestselling book Care of the Soul and ?fteen other books on deepening spirituality and cultivating soul in every aspect of life. He has been a monk, a musician, a university professor, and a psychotherapist, and today he lectures widely on holistic medicine, spirituality, psychotherapy, and the arts. He lectures frequently in Ireland and has a special love of Irish culture. He has a PhD in religion from Syracuse University and has won several awards for his work, including an honorary doctorate from Lesley University and the Humanitarian Award from Einstein Medical School of Yeshiva University.
Robert Romanyshyn is an Emeritus Professor of Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute. The author of seven books, he has published poems in several on line poetry sites and in print journals, including most recently, ‘In Memoriam: 1914-2014’ in The Humanistic Psychologist. A contributor to numerous edited volumes, he has published more than forty articles in psychology, philosophy, and education journals, written book reviews, has done radio, television and on line interviews, and has presented lectures and workshops worldwide. His most recent book is The Frankenstein Prophecies
Lady Diana Whitmore is the CEO and a founding Director of Teens and Toddlers UK, a charity founded in 2001 to address the social exclusion of young people. As well as being CEO of Teens and Toddlers Diana is founder, President and Co-chair of the Psychosynthesis & Education Trust, having practised psychosynthesis – a branch of positive psychology concerned with helping individuals to realise their potential - for 35 years. She is also the author of two books, Psychosynthesis Counselling in Action and Psychosynthesis in Education: A Guide to the Joy of Learning.
Chris Robertson has been a psychotherapist and trainer since 1978. His training background includes Psychosynthesis, Child Psychotherapy, Family Therapy and Archetypal Psychology. He contributed the chapter ‘Dangerous Margins’ to the Ecopsychology anthology Vital Signs (Karnac, 2012); is co-author of Emotions and Needs (OUP, 2002); and author of several articles including ‘The Numinous Psyche’ in International Journal of Psychotherapy (Vol. 18, no2). He is a co-founder of Re-Vision, an integrative and transpersonal psychotherapy training centre, where he is involved in developing Ecopsychology.
Nigel Hamilton, Ph.D, is the Director of the Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education and Dream Research Institute (DRI), a Transpersonal Psychotherapy Training Centre and Clinic in London, where he lectures and practices as a Psychotherapist; UK representative for Sufi Order international; originally trained as a Physicist, working at the MIT for the use of light in Energy Storage Research. He is the author of the recently published Awakening Through Dreams: The Journey Through the Inner Landscape (2014).
Mary Smail, is a psychotherapist and senior dramatherapy trainer in the Jungian Sesame Approach which works symbolically through embodied imagination. She was Director of the Sesame Institute until 2015. Mary presently works in private practice under the name of SoulWorks UK. She runs the training Psyche and Soma – Soul-making through the arts and is a visiting trainer at Re-Vision Counselling & Psychotherapy with a Soulful Perspective. She is co-author of Myth and Fairy-tale in Dramatherapy - The Golden Stories of Sesame.
Session 1: Psychotherapy and the Soul - a classical view
with Thomas Moore
We talk to world renowned psychotherapist and author, Thomas Moore, on the complexities of the Soul in these current times. We look at archetypal psychology, psychotherapy, alchemy, spirituality and the imagination when it seems like currently thinking is biased towards tangible and measurable knowledge. Moore suggests that many professions have lost faith and trust in their own thinking as a result of this polarisation. We look at the place of soul in psychotherapy, the "soul story" and the meaning of care for the soul.
Session 2: Research with a soulful perspective
with Professor Robert Romanyshyn
A researcher’s unconscious dynamics are present in the research process. Research is re-search, a searching again for what has already claimed researcher. It is a vocation, a being called into a work that aligns the topic with the complex and archetypal patterns of the researcher’s psyche. Robert discusses processes modeled on the transference relation in psychotherapy which differentiate the researcher’s plans for the work from what the work itself wants. Implications for ethics and the nature of psychological writing are explored.
Session 3: A psychology with a soul
with Lady Diana Whitmore
In this inspiring webcast, Diana Whitmore speaks about the meaning at the heart of a "psychology with a soul" and her motivations to work on putting the soul back into psychology. Reflecting on her understanding of "psycho-spiritual process" in the context of psychotherapy, Diana considers ideas such as deeper spiritual identity as problems connected with meaning and purpose, or meaning and value in life. We also look at the idea of Social Psychosynthesis and her current work with the charity 'Teens and Toddlers UK', founded in 2001 to address the social exclusion of young people
Session 4: Psychotherapy with a soulful perspective
with Chris Robertson
Chris Robertson, co-founder of the Re-Vision, speaks about motivation and meaning of holding a soulful perspective at the heart of a training curriculum or in therapy practice. There is the craft of soul-making, a craft that is framed by a circular "re-visioning" theoretical model that integrates a range of ideas and concepts. He looks at the space that emerges between therapist and client, the ‘’soul field’, particularly when a client drops down into something unknown, and many other aspects that emerge in "soulful" therapy.
Session 5: The soul and dreams
with Nigel Hamilton
Soul and dreams are intimately connected and this interview discusses the rich language of dreams in relation to the soul. Drawing on his dream research, Nigel Hamilton looks at different aspects of working with dreams in therapy and how dreams can become a medium to communicate important and significant aspects of the deeply personal in a persons life. In this this interview, we explore dream contexts and connections to archetypes, spirit, transformation and transpersonal psychology.
Session 6: The imaginative and untold soul stories in psychotherapy
with Mary Smail
Mary Smail speaks about her passion for the "untold story", the importance of imaginative responses, and how story telling can be soul making in the psychotherapy context. Mary reflects on her therapeutic work which brings psychotherapy together with movement and creative arts therapy and utilises myth and fairytales. We look at how soul may speak through dreams, images, hunches or intuitions and how therapists can work with such opportunities for change and meaning making
